ARTWORK DESCRIPTION The subject of the painting- “Kangaroo Tail”- is one of the designs painted by the Senior Kitja men on the Gurirr Gurirr (dancing) headboards for Rover Thomas’ well-known corroboree. Charlene was given permission by Rover to paint this and his other designs whilst she worked at the Care Hostel in Warmun prior to Rover’s passing. During this time- she was privy to many of the techniques of the Master Painter who obviously could see the talent of the young girl. A series of small works featuring these dance board themes by Charlene was hung in the Telstra Awards Darwin 2005. _________________ _______ ARTIST PROFILE Charlene Carrington Charlene is definitely one of the most talented- exciting young artists in Australia. A respected Pintupi Elder- Barney once lead a traditional life travelling around his country. He painted with the best- even prior to the emergence of the Papunya painting era. His country centres around the area of the Macdonald Ranges- including many salt lakes and wells to the east and west of Kintore. The traditional sacred sites of the area are the content of his artworks. His favoured theme was the Tingari cycle from the Macdonald Ranges to Tjukurla- which he depicted in a variety of strong patterns. Barney resided in Alice Springs until his death in early 2007- fulfilling his role as an ambassador for his people both with the spoken word and through his highly acclaimed and symbolic paintings.
